Ans. - Most of the farmers lack storage facilities. So they are forced to sell their products even when they do not suit the market.

Ans. - Due to economic changes, forest policies and political pressure from state and private industries in the last 200 years, tribals are being forced to work in plantations, construction sites, industries and homes.

Q. 21 - What were the economic effects of the First World War on India?
Ans. - The first world war had the following effects on India-
1. Because of this war, there was a huge increase in the defense expenditure of the British Indian government. To meet this expenditure, the government increased taxes on personal income and business profits.
2. Due to the increase in military expenditure and the supply of war material, the prices of essential things have increased.
There was a boom and the life of common people became difficult.
3. This war increased the demand for industrial goods like jute bags, clothes, railway tracks etc. and brought down the imports coming to India from other countries.
4. Indian industries expanded during the war and Indian business groups demanded more opportunities for development.
5. Business groups made substantial profits from the war.

Q. 22 - How are forests useful to us? explain.
Ans. - Forests are useful for us in the following ways-
1. Provide timber.
2. Produce the oxygen we breathe.
3. Protects the soil needed to grow crops.
4. Acts as a protective belt.
5. Help in storage of underground water.
6. We get fruits, latex, turpentine oil, gum, medicinal plants from forests.

Q. 23 - A good constitution protects the basic structure of the country from tainted sentiments. Explain with examples.
Ans. - The Constitution prevents us from taking such decisions, which may hurt the larger principles in which the country believes. For example- many people have started feeling that party politics has become very distorted, so now to correct the eagles, the rule should be handed over to a dictator or there should be military rule. Getting swayed by this sentiment, people would often not be able to realize that in the long run, dictatorial rule would destroy all their interests. A good constitution protects the basic structure of the country from such tainted sentiments.

Q. 24 - Why did James Mill and Thomas Macaulay think that European education was necessary in India?
Ans. - James Mill and Thomas Macaulay used to think so because-
1. He was of the opinion that the aim of education should be to teach only practical and useful things. Therefore, Indians should be made aware of the scientific and technological developments that have taken place in the West.
2. According to Macaulay, India was an uncivilized country, which needed to be civilized.
3. According to him, the knowledge contained in the books kept in a single shelf of the European library is more than the knowledge of the entire vernacular literature of India and Arabia. He believed that no branch of oriental knowledge could compare with the knowledge that England had produced.
4. He realized that a knowledge of the English language would give Indians the opportunity to read some of the best literature in the world. It will also make them aware of the development of western science and philosophy.
