'पर्यावरण' शब्द दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना हुआ है- परि तथा आवरण। इसका अर्थ है हमारे चारों ओर का आवरण अथवा घेरा। मानव समेत समस्त जीव इस आवरण को प्रभावित करते हैं और स्वयं भी इससे प्रभावित होते हैं। पर्यावरण में सभी प्राकृतिक और मनुष्य निर्मित भवन, उद्योग, खेत आदि सजीव, निर्जीव, मृदा, खनिज, नदियाँ, पर्वत आदि कारक शामिल हैं।
'Environment' The word is made up of two words- surround and cover. It means the covering or circle around us. All living beings including humans affect this cover and themselves are also affected by it. पर्यावरण से संबंधित ज्ञान की पाश्चात्य अवधारणा हमें केवल इसके घटकों के वैज्ञानिक पक्ष से ही अवगत करवाती है, परन्तु भारतीय दर्शन में पर्यावरण के वैज्ञानिक पक्ष के अतिरिक्त इसके संरक्षण के नैतिक दायित्व और उपाय भी बताये गए हैं।

1. भौतिक पर्यावरण- भौतिक पर्यावरण में पर्यावरण के अजैविक घटक शामिल हैं। इसमें विभिन्न प्राकृतिक घटक उदाहरण के लिए हवा, पानी, मिट्टी, चट्टान इत्यादि के साथ-साथ मनुष्य द्वारा निर्मित विभिन्न संरचनाएँ जैसे घर, बगीचे, कारखाने, सिनेमाघर आदि भी सम्मिलित हैं। किसी भी प्राकृतिक घटक की अधिकता अथवा कमी या उनकी अनुपस्थिति का उस क्षेत्र के विकास तथा वृद्धि पर असर पड़ता है।
1. Physical Environment- The physical environment includes the abiotic components of the environment. It includes various natural components such as air, water, soil, rock, etc. as well as various human-made structures such as houses, gardens, factories, cinema halls, etc. The excess or deficiency or absence of any natural component has an effect on the growth and development of that area.

2. जैविक पर्यावरण- इसमें हमारे चारों ओर के भौतिक वातावरण के सजीव घटक और उनकी प्रक्रियाएँ सम्मिलित हैं। सभी पेड़-पौधे, पशु-पक्षियों और उनके बीच तथा भौतिक पर्यावरण में होने वाली प्रक्रियाएँ जैविक पर्यावरण में सम्मिलित हैं। इसी तरह पेड़-पौधों की प्रकाश-संश्लेषण क्रिया, सजीवों की श्वसन प्रक्रिया, खाद्य श्रृंखला और खाद्य जाल सभी जैविक पर्यावरण में सम्मिलित हैं।
2. Biological Environment- This includes the living components of the physical environment around us and their processes. Biological environment includes all the plants, animals and birds and the processes occurring between them and in the physical environment. Similarly the photosynthesis of plants, the respiratory process of living organisms, the food chain and the food web are all involved in the biological environment.
3. सामाजिक पर्यावरण- प्रकृति एवं विभिन्न जातियों के मध्य, विभिन्न वर्गों के एवं एक ही वर्ग की जातियों एवं प्रजातियों के मध्य लगातार पारस्परिक अंतक्रियायें होती हैं। इन पारस्परिक प्रक्रियाओं में से अधिकतर जैव रासायनिक चक्र अथवा खाद्य श्रृंखला से जुड़ी हुई होती हैं। इन पारस्परिक प्रक्रियाओं में से अनेक विशेष तौर पर सामाजिक अंतरक्रियाओं के क्षेत्र में आती हैं, जो सामाजिक पर्यावरण का निर्माण करती हैं। मनुष्य के सामाजिक रूप से सबसे ज्यादा विकसित होने के कारण उसकी पारस्परिक प्रक्रियाएँ सामाजिक पर्यावरण का बहुत महत्वपूर्ण घटक है। पूर्व तथा पाश्चात्य, प्राचीन व वर्तमान समाजों की प्रकृति तथा उनके पर्यावरणीय व्यवहार के संबंध में विभिन्न मत हैं। सामाजिक वातावरण विभिन्न सभ्यता के विकास पर आधारित हैं, जो समय के साथ बदलती हैं। विभिन्न जनसमूहों के सामाजिक रीति-रिवाज़ों से पर्यावरण तथा विकास पर अलग-अलग असर पड़ता है। इस प्रकार पर्यावरण केवल भौतिक संघटक ही नहीं है, बल्कि जैविक तथा सामाजिक वातावरण की पारस्परिक प्रक्रियाएँ भी हैं।
3. Social Environment- There are frequent interactions between nature and different species, between different classes and between species and species of the same class. Most of these interactions are linked to the biochemical cycle or food chain. Many of these interactions are particularly within the domain of social interactions, which constitute the social environment. Being the most socially developed human being, his interpersonal processes are a very important component of the social environment. There are different theories regarding the nature and environmental behavior of the former and western, ancient and present societies. Social environments are based on the development of different civilizations, which change over time. The social customs of different groups of people have different effects on the environment and development. Thus the environment is not only the physical component, but also the interactions between the biological and social environment.
